On March 5, the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), a leading German think tank, hosted an expert discussion on the results of the study “Justice in Eastern Ukraine during the military aggression of the Russian Federation”. This study was conducted by a group of experts and NGO upon the initiative and coordination of the International Renaissance Foundation in 2016-2017.
The discussion participants, which were joined by German officials and politicians, spoke about challenges, which the Ukrainian justice system faces in the conditions of the military aggression, and discussed whether the Ukrainian legislation complies with the international legal standards, and whether the legislation provides, in particular, the sufficient legal definition of the status of the parties to the conflict.
The panelists contemplated over the questions what can and should be done in order to increase the institutional capacity of the Ukrainian justice system to consider cases related to the armed conflict in the Donbass, and bring those responsible to justice.
