Trailer of the documentary film by director and soldier Oleg Sentsov to be premiered in Karlovy Vary released
Ahead of the world premiere of Oleg Sentsov’s new film Real, which will take place at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic, the team presented a trailer. The accidentally filmed battle became a full-length movie and shows, as Sentsov says, life at war and its true face without any decorations or falsehoods.

With the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Oleg Sentsov joined the Ukrainian army and fought on the southeastern front. In the summer of 2023, he accidentally filmed one of the battles when his APC was hit by the enemy. Oleh was in the nearest trench and tried to organize the evacuation of a part of his unit, which was under fire, almost without ammunition, to a position codenamed “Real”, using radio communications.
“Sentsov’s film is a unique and immersive experience that offers a hyper-documentary look at the reality of war through the eyes of one of its direct participants,” comments Karel Oh, artistic director of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, where the world premiere will take place.
The film Real is a Ukrainian-Croatian co-production. The producers are Oleg Sentsov (Kray Kinema), Denis Ivanov (Arthouse Traffic), Mike Downey (Downey Ink), Boris T. Matich and Lana Matich (Propeler Film). The film was created with the support of the European Solidarity Fund for Ukrainian Films, the Documenting Ukraine Project initiated by the Institute for the Humanities (IWM, Vienna), the FILMBOOST program of the Deutsche Filmakademie in cooperation with the NGO Docudays, and the International Renaissance Foundation.
