Imprisoned Freedom, a photo exhibition dedicated to Ukrainian journalists illegally held in Russian captivity, has opened in Brussels. The opening took place in the European Parliament’s information hub on April 9. The exhibition will run until April 11 inclusive.
According to the Institute of Mass Information, Russia is holding at least 30 civilian Ukrainian media workers in captivity. The central figure of the exhibition is Ukrainian journalist Victoria Roshchyna, who was tortured to death in a Russian prison.

At the opening of the exhibition, Iryna Zemlyana, a media expert at the Institute of Mass Information, spoke about the fates of journalist Oleksandr Makhov, who was killed by Russians for defending Ukraine, and photojournalist Maksym Levin, and called for doing everything possible to free media workers from Russian captivity.
“Since the beginning of 2014, more than 100 journalists have been held in Russian captivity, and at least 30 journalists are currently in captivity. This means that each of them may not return alive.
There is a story about Victoria Roshchyna, a Ukrainian journalist who died in Russian captivity at the age of 27. She was a young, healthy woman. What could they have done to her so that she did not survive? We must do everything possible to return Ukrainian journalists who are being illegally detained by Russia on trumped-up charges,” said Iryna Zemlyana.
