The Board of the International Renaissance Foundation: who are they?

The Board of the International Renaissance Foundation consists of public figures who have outstanding achievements in promoting an Open society, are independent of the Foundation, do not receive a salary, and comply with the provisions for preventing conflicts of interest.

As of 2023, the Foundation’s Board includes Volodymyr Yermolenko (Chairman of the Board), Alim Aliev, Olena Halushka, Mykhailo Honchar, Pavlo Klimkin, Oleksandra Matviichuk and Liubov Tsybulska. 

Volodymyr Yermolenko, Chairman of the Board

Volodymyr Yermolenko is a Ukrainian philosopher, writer, journalist, President of PEN Ukraine, Director of Analytics at Internews Ukraine, and one of the initiators and editor-in-chief of the UkraineWorld initiative.

He teaches at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, is a member of the Supervisory Board of the Ukrainian Institute, and has written numerous articles on Ukraine, Europe, and world processes in the Ukrainian and international press for Le Monde, Atlantic Council, Financial Times, Newsweek, EUObserver, Euractiv, and Die Welt. He is also the author of five books.


Oleksandra Matviichuk

Oleksandra Matviichuk is a human rights activist, Chair of the Board of the Center for Civil Liberties, Nobel Laureate 2022, winner of the Vasyl Stus and Defender of Democracy awards, and member of the Advisory Council to the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights.

Formerly, she was the coordinator of the Euromaidan SOS civic initiative and initiator of the #SaveOlegSentsov campaign. She participated in the Ukrainian Emerging Leaders Programme at the Center for Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) at Stanford University (USA). She authorizes several alternative reports for various UN bodies, such as the Council of Europe, the European Union, the OSCE, and the International Criminal Court.


Pavlo Klimkin

Pavlo Klimkin is a former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, statesman, and diplomat. He is a third-class holder of the Order of Merit. He co-founded the Centre for National Resilience and Development and is a member of the Supervisory Board of the Come Back Alive Charitable Foundation.

He was Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and headed the Ministry’s staff. He also headed the Ukrainian delegation to the negotiations on the signing of the historic EU-Ukraine Association Agreement and served as Ukraine’s Ambassador to Germany.


Liubov Tsybulska

Liubov Tsybulska is former Head of the Centre for Strategic Communications and Information Security at the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, a journalist and strategic communications expert.

She was a journalist, editor, and scriptwriter for several Ukrainian TV channels. She was a strategic communications adviser to the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Viktor Muzhenko, and head of the press service of the Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration. She was also the head of the Hybrid Warfare Analysis Group at the Ukrainian Crisis Media Centre and an adviser on countering information threats to the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba.


Mykhailo Honchar

Mykhailo Honchar is the President of the Centre for Global Studies «Strategy XXI», an expert on international energy and security relations, and the editor-in-chief of Black Sea Security magazine. He is also the author, co-author, and editor of several books and publications on energy, energy security, and international relations published in Ukraine and Europe. 

He is an associate expert at the Razumkov Centre and the Centre for Russian Studies. He has also worked for the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine and conducted research at the National Institute for Strategic Studies and the National Institute for International Security Studies of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine. Since 2016, he has been a National Committee on Industrial Policy member.


Olena Halushka

Olena Halushka is a co-founder of the International Center for Ukrainian Victory (ICUV) and Head of International Relations at the Anticorruption Action Centre. She is a former member of the Kyiv City Council.

She writes articles for the Atlantic Council, EUObserver, The Washington Post, and The Foreign Policy. She advocates for post-war reconstruction in the West and increased military assistance to Ukraine.


Alim Aliev

Alim Aliev is the Deputy Director General of the Ukrainian Institute, a journalist, human rights activist, and manager of educational and cultural projects. Co-founder of the NGOs CrimeaSOS and Crimean House. Member of the Executive Board of PEN Ukraine. Member of the supervisory boards of the NGO Centre UA and the Human Rights Education Centre in Lviv.

He was the organizer of the Days of Crimean Tatar Culture in Lviv. In co-authorship with Sevgil Musaieva, he wrote a book conversation with the leader of the Crimean Tatar people, «Mustafa Dzhemilev. Unbreakable». He was the initiator and coordinator of the Ukrainian-Crimean Tatar literary contest “Crimean Fig / Qirim inciri”, and the festival of the same name. He created the digital museum of the deportation of Crimean Tatars, «Tamırlar».
