On March 27, 2007, a meeting on cooperation between the Office of Public Protection and the Kharkiv regional bodies of internal affairs was held in the MIA Central Department in Kharkiv region. After the meeting an Agreement on cooperation of the Office of Public Protection and Chervonozavodskyy regional unit of the CD was signed.
Starting from September 2006, Office of Public Protection, aimed at ensuring of the free high quality legal assistance to people who are accused of committing crimes but cannot afford private legal advice, commenced its activities in Kharkiv. In order to ensure cooperation between the Ministry of Internal Affair (MIA) Central Department (CD) in Kharkiv region, Comintern regional department and the Office, an Agreement of Cooperation was concluded that provisions additional guarantees of observance of the rights of detained, among them are:
– access to a lawyer from the pilot project before the detained is questioned by the official from region militia department;
– isolated meeting room for a detained person and a lawyer;
– Singular permission for a lawyer to see a detained person as often as it might be needed when pleading the case.
The Free Legal Assistance Charitable Program is financed by the Viktor Pinchuk – social initiative Charitable Organization and the International Renaissance Foundation and is carried out in cooperation with the Open Society Institute Legal Initiative, Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, Union of Advocates of Ukraine, and Ukrainian Bar Association.
